What are Lingual Braces?

Lingual braces are placed behind the teeth, making them invisible to other people. Incognito is a high-tech lingual brace that provides a low-profile treatment option with maximum comfort.
Each of the gold alloy brackets are individually made using state-of-the-art technology – this creates accurate brackets that give excellent tooth control. There is usually a short period of speech disturbance and tongue irritation, which resolves within a fortnight.
Lingual appliances are attached to the inside surface of the teeth which makes them invisible to the outside world.

Braces fitted behind the teeth, are described as lingual, from lingua, the Latin word for tongue. Concealed on the inside of the teeth, they are most often worn by adult private patients who want their teeth straightened but don’t want to be seen in braces.
As with all brace systems which are fixed to teeth, they allow for greater three dimensional control than removable treatments and can treat and improve a wider range of problems.
There are many lingual systems, including customised and non-customised options. It’s also possible to have invisible lingual braces on your upper teeth and standard braces on lower teeth.
One benefit of lingual braces is that they are less likely to mark the teeth than standard braces – a small risk of orthodontic treatment is decalcification, an attack on tooth enamel producing white marks, usually the result of poor diet and poor oral hygiene. Research shows that lingual braces lower this risk.

You may encounter an initial difficulty in speaking with lingual appliances tongue and soreness, however these issues generally resolve themselves quickly as you get used to the braces. They can also be harder to clean but diligent oral hygiene on your part keeps this at bay.
The cost of treatment with lingual appliances is also more than conventional fixed appliances, which reflects the greater laboratory fees in producing the appliance and the increased surgery time required in the adjustments.
